Today the Congress has voted in favour of admitting Nevada to the Union as the 36^th State.

It can be argued that this act has been taken due to the territory been a Republican dominated Territory and will provide much needed support for President Abraham Lincoln’s re-election.


This act has been quickly fastened down by Union sympathizers in order to ensure the state's participation in the 1864 presidential election in support of President Abraham Lincoln.

Critics have called this a “Power play” by President intent to tighten his grip on the union. It is common knowledge that Lincoln has appointed territorial officials in Nevada who are Key Republicans, and he knew he could count on the congressmen and citizens of a new state of Nevada to support him in the coming presidential election and to vote for his proposed amendment on Slavery.
