      On this day, 11 November 1918

      Fighting ceased on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, when an armistice was signed between Germany and the Allied nations, regarding this day as the end of World War I.

      In November, 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day.

      Today, in the US, this holiday is celebrated as Veteran’s Day. It’s the holiday for those of us who served, and managed to get out (survived) of the uniform.

      Memorial Day, is to honor and mourn the U.S. military personnel who have died in the course of carrying out their duties. It is observed on the last Monday in May.

      Armed Forces day is the holiday reserved for those who currently serve in the military. It is observed on the third Saturday in May.
